Gosh... it was a long time since I wrote my last blog post. After dad passed away I froze and couldn't socialize for a long time. I dove deep into a dark blue water of a vast Ocean and was there for a long time. But I made some crafting. I've been knitting, sewing, reading and praying. Thank God I wasn't depressed, I was just very introspective. That happens sometimes with me, when I need to put everything into perspective.

Meu Deus... já faz bastante tempo desde a última vez que escrevi aqui no blog. Depois do meu pai ter falecido, congelei e não consegui socializar por muito tempo. Mergulhei bem fundo num vasto Oceano de água azul escura e fiquei lá por muito tempo. Mas fiz algumas coisas. Tenho tricotado, costurado, lido e orado. Graças a Deus não fiquei depressiva, somente bastante introspectiva. O que acontece algumas vezes comigo quando preciso colocar tudo em perspectiva.

I thought it was the right decision to post about this dress now. The day my dad passed away I was sewing this dress when the phone rang... So, I couldn't finish this project for a very long time because it just reminded me of the pain that I went through on that day that my dear father left us.

Pensei que seria a escolha certa postar sobre este vestido agora. No dia em que o meu pai faleceu estava a costurar este vestido quando o telefone tocou... Portanto, não consegui terminar este projecto por muito tempo, porque simplesmente lembrava-me a dor que passei no dia em que o meu pai nos deixou.

Three months later here it is, the finished project. This is my second sewing project and my very first dress! I encountered many difficulties and I think I should chosen a easier dress. But now it's done, and to tell the truth I'm quite satisfied with the final result. But oh boy... if I need to master those lines! :O)

Três meses depois aqui está ele, o projecto terminado. Este é o meu segundo projecto de costura e o meu primeiríssimo vestido! Encontrei muitas dificuldades e penso que devia ter escolhido um vestido mais simples. Mas agora está feito, e para dizer a verdade estou bastante satisfeita com o resultado final. Mas menina... se preciso dominar aquelas linhas! :O)

The dress is the scalloped edge one from Simplicity 1668, from the forties. Is feminine and fun!

O vestido é o das bordas recortadas da Simplicity 1668, dos anos 40. É feminino e divertido!

I planned to show you each step while I was sewing it. But I lost all my will power, my dear readers. Sorry. But you can see above how I spread the pieces and then I traced them out on the fabric with a pencil.

Planeava mostrar todos os passos do projecto em quanto fazia. Mas perdi a vontade toda, meus queridos leitores. Desculpem. Mas podem ver em cima como espalhei os moldes e depois tracei no tecido com lápis.

The fabric is a lovely medium weight cotton. Easy to cut and to sew. And the flowers are so lovely!

O tecido é de um algodão maravilhoso. Fácil de cortar e de costurar. E as flores são tão queridas!

One of the difficult parts for me was doing the gatherings. But it was fun to learn!

Uma das partes dificeis para mim foi fazer os franzidos. Mas foi bastante divertido de aprender!

I would like to have taken photographs outdoors in the garden but has been gray sky and rainy. But on the next Spring I will have more opportunities. I can wear these accessories above, hat, purse, shoes, belt and flowers on my hair of course! One of my favorite hats are the conical ones from the 40s and 50s! This one is vintage of course. Looks well with a cute straw purse like the one shown above, vintage inspiration.

Gostaria de ter tirado fotografias num jardim lá fora, mas o tempo tem estado cinzento e de chuva. Mas na próxima Primavera terei mais oportunidades. Poderei usar com estes accessórios em cima, chapéu, mala, sapatos, cinto e flores no cabelo claro! Um dos meus chapéus favoritos são os cónicos dos anos 40 e 50! Este é vintage claro. Fica bem com malas de palha como esta em cima, de inspiração vintage.

Certainly this dress will be one that has a strong mark on it. Is my first dress as a sewing project and will carry strong memories with it. Let's see which type of memory and what new feelings will bring me next year!

Certamente este vestido será sempre marcante para mim. É o meu primeiro vestido como projecto de costura e carrega memórias fortes com ele. Vamos ver que tipo de memória e que novos sentimentos trará para o próximo ano!

Sew For Victory 2.0 final

I made a 1940s brown skirt for my Sew For Victory 2.0 project. My sewing experience was very little (only some trousers hems and simple tasks by hand) I had to choose a very simple project to begin my learning. But I must say that I'm pleased with the final result. I know... is such a simple project, but for me was a great achievement!

 

Fiz uma saia castanha dos anos 40 como projecto para o Sew For Victory 2.0. A minha experiência na costura era muito limitada (apenas algumas bainhas e tarefas simples feitas à mão), por isso, tinha de escolher um projecto muito simples para começar a minha aprendizagem. Mas tenho de referir que estou muito satisfeita com o resultado final. Bem sei... é um projecto tão simples, mas para mim foi uma grande proeza!

After my inspiration board I chosen a 1940s pattern from McCall's. I was looking for garments that I could wear everyday and that I was missing on my wardrobe. Last year I totally fell in love for late 1930s and beginning 1940s fashion that I didn't know so well. Before I wore many dresses from 60s, 70s and 80s, Japanese vintage to be precise. Although I still love my Japanese dresses to bits, they are my treasures, I want to knit and sew garments from the recent found Eras. Because I need to build my wardrobe from nothing, I need everything! So I began with basics. A pretty skirt and jacket suit! Of course, although my true inspiration were plaids, I began with the plain colour skirt for learning. But I already have the plaids fabric for later!

Após o meu quadro de inspiração, escolhi um modelito dos anos 40 da McCall. Estava à procura de peças que poderia usar no meu dia-a-dia e que estavam em falta no meu guarda-roupa. No ano passado apaixonei-me pela moda do final dos anos 30 e inicio dos anos 40, que eu não conhecia assim tão bem. Antes, eu usava muitos vestidos vintage japoneses dos anos 60, 70 e 80. Embora ainda ame os meus vestidinhos japoneses, que são os meus tesouros, quero tricotar e costurar roupa das eras recentemente descobertas. E porque preciso construir o meu guarda-roupa a partir do zero, preciso de tudo! Por isso, comecei com os básicos. Uma saia e casaco giríssimos! Claro, que embora a minha verdadeira inspiração fosse o xadrez, eu comecei por uma saia de cor sólida, para aprender claro. Mas já tenho o tecido em xadrez para mais tarde!


McCall 1940s Pattern


I had the pattern, and now? I didn't know a thing! I looked at the instructions that came with the pattern. I cut the pieces for a muslin and then I began to sew by hand. When I reached the waistband and side opening plackets I was lost completely! The instructions weren't good enough for a beginner and I didn't get it, at all. Fortunately, I had purchased a 1940s sewing booklet from Simplicity and saved my life.

Tinha o modelo, e agora? Não sabia nada! Olhei para as instruções que vinham com o modelo. Cortei as peças num tecido para testar e comecei a cozer à mão. Quando cheguei ao cinto e à abertura lateral estava completamente perdida! As instruções não eram suficientes para uma iniciante e não entendia nada. Felizmente, tinha comprado um livro dos anos 40 sobre costura da Simplicity que salvou a minha vida.

In the pattern, it called for a side opening plackets with snaps, instead of a zipper. I thought it was easier but now I think probably the zipper is less work because of the plackets fabric folds.

No modelo, pedia uma abertura com molas, em vez de um fecho de correr. Pensei até que fosse mais fácil, mas agora penso que o fecho daria menos trabalho por causa das muitas dobras da abertura.

I used cheap raw fabric for trying out the size and to learn how to put the pieces together. Because I didn't had any fabric at home, I couldn't do a wearable muslin. But it was very useful to learn. I learned that we should choose a muslin fabric similar with the final fabric.

Usei tecido crú e barato para experimentar o tamanho e aprender a cozer as peças. Porque não tinha nenhum tecido em casa, não pude fazer um trabalho experimental mas fosse usável. Mas foi muito útil para aprender. Aprendi que devemos escolher um tecido/teste parecido com o tecido final.


Muslin in raw fabric

The final fabric was a little tricky to sew, at least for whom is learning. It was a little slippery and stretchy. In spite of all, I love the final effect because is so comfortable and has a really nice drape. It doesn't need to iron! Which was an issue for sewing properly at the time. I should sewed with an easier fabric for a first project. But isn't too bad. The side opening plackets were tricky, but I like the look of the snaps on it, looks very vintage!

O tecido final era um bocadinho difícil de costurar, pelo menos para quem está a aprender. Era um pouco escorregadio e elástico. Apesar de tudo, amei o efeito final porque é muito confortável e tem um cair muito bonito. Não preciso de engomar! O que foi um problema para costurar na altura. Devia ter costurado com um tecido mais fácil para um primeiro projecto. Mas não ficou muito mal. A abertura lateral foi complicada, mas gosto do visual das molas que tem um ar muito vintage!

I've tried to take photos of the outfit outdoors, but the weather didn't help. It was raining for days and days and rather dark. The time was running out! So the only photographs token outdoors weren't so good, because was at the end of the day and the light left was rather red. And my son kept crying for my lap and he came out on many pictures. I wish my husband enjoyed more taking pictures but is not the case and sometimes he cuts my head of! :o)

Tentei tirar fotografias lá fora, mas o tempo não ajudou. Choveu dias a fio e estava bastante escuro. O tempo estava a esgotar-se! Então as únicas fotos tiradas lá fora não ficaram assim tão boas, porque foram tiradas no final do dia e a luz que restava era muito avermelhada. E o meu filhote insistia em chorar pelo meu colo e saiu em muitas fotografias. Gostava muito que o meu esposo apreciasse mais fotografia, mas não é o caso, e por vezes até me corta a cabeça! :o)

Last February on my birthday, my dear husband gave me this wonderful book, known by many of you, 1940s Fashion's book is full of inspiration and so much prettiness. If you don't have it, try to buy it because is fantastic! For this challenge I inspired myself on this book, specially on plaid suits. 

 

No último Fevereiro no meu aniversário, o meu querido esposo ofereceu-me este livro maravilhoso, conhecido por muitas de vós, o livro "1940s Fashion" está cheio de inspiração e coisas lindas. Se ainda não o têm, tentem comprar porque é fantástico! Para este desafio inspirei-me neste livro, especialmente nos fatos em xadrez.

I love reading your blogs, gals, and see what you've been up to. I always learn so much with all of you! But sometimes I feel the need to share what I'm making, or write a little more about an idea that isn´t possible to put in a simple comment on your beautiful vintage related blogs.

So I decided to take the effort and start my own blog, that will be a very simple one. Although my life is very unstable because of various personal reasons, where to include my own health issues, I'll try to post once a week, or when not possible 1 in 2 weeks.

I don't expect many readers and followers, at all! But get to know if you come around and if you are reading this post in this very moment, you are so very welcome. Please say hi! I'll be so happy to get to know you and I'll appreciate so much to read your comments.
